HMRC runs webinars to provide help for small businesses

HMRC has frequently been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons so accountants may be interested to learn that the Revenue is now offering to help the UK small business community.

The government department is holding a series of webinars to address some of the issues faced by owners of small enterprises and the self-employed. Advice will be offered on topics including VAT, online self-assessment filing and capital allowances. The Revenue will also provide an overview into how limited companies work and the first steps an employer needs to take when he sets up his business.

Colin Ford is heading the project and he explained that the webinars will give people the chance to take part in a live seminar and ask questions. Pre-recorded webinars will also be accessible for those who cannot take part in the live event.

He went on to say that dealing with tax can be a daunting prospect for somebody newly starting out in business and HMRC believes the webinars are a good way of making it hassle free. They have been designed to complement the information already contained on the Revenue and Business Link websites.

Each live 30 minute webinar will be followed by a question and answer session lasting a further half an hour. The sessions are free, but participants do need to register in advance.
