Why don’t accountants like social media?

Why do accountants steer clear of social media? It seems a strange thing to do, especially for contractor and online accountants who are looking for clients.

The best source of business comes from referrals – either from colleagues or clients. You would think that contractor accountants in their droves would be lining up to use a free tool that allowed this to happen.

One of the best tools for business professionals is LinkedIn. At the start of the year, around 5 million people in the UK used the professional network and the largest proportion of them appear to be graduates aged between 25 and 34. Worldwide, the site is used by 100 million members, 20% of whom are based in Europe.

However, research conducted towards the end of last year showed that accountancy firms only use LinkedIn sparingly. Baker Tilly, BDO and PKF are among the mid-tier firms to take advantage of the business networking site and some of the smaller firms have a high proportion of employees registered.

On the other hand, many firms have not even created a company page on LinkedIn. It’s free to do and it only takes a few minutes to get your presence out to all 100 million users.

Accountancy firms should start encouraging employees to join LinkedIn. It’s a very powerful recruitment and business development tool. 30 minutes a week is all it takes to build up a solid network of contacts and you never know how many of them might just lead to a much needed contract.
